While I’ve never been as high on the Death Note series as most other anime and manga fans, It certainly provides some interesting avenues for a video game adaptation. If you by chance have never heard of the series the premise is as follows. A high school prodigy named Light Yagami finds himself in possession of the Death Note, a notebook used by the gods of death to usher any soul to their demise. Light takes it upon himself to become judge, jury, and executioner for humanity assuming the mantle of Kira as he murders en-masse and evades law enforcement led by a man known only as L.
This week Bandai Namco has announced Death Note: Killer Within a social deduction title with a multiplayer focus. The game is set to launch on PlayStation 4/5 and PC through Steam on November 5th. I am interested in seeing if this game can truly carve out a unique identity for itself as opposed to simply being an Among Us game with an anime coating of paint slapped over it.
Death Note: Killer Within features games with up to 10 players split into two teams. Each team is either given the objective to steal the Death Note from Kira or eliminate the genius investigator L. Players must engage in a series of randomized scenarios to uncover each other’s identities while completing core objectives. One player on each team will assume the role of either Kira or L while the others comprise their followers or investigators respectively. Though the details are quite vague Bandai has promised that each role will allow for a variety of playstyles and encourage unique strategies.
This game will also feature full cross-play functionality and allow for extensive player customization with various cosmetics and outfits for your avatar to wear. You can also choose a unique animation for your character to use during key moments of the game.
