Recently, there had been murmurings online that a remake of the original Rayman was in the works. Now, it seems those rumors have born a certain type of fruit. While it may not be confirmed, the Rayman series is returning in some form. However, there is a fair bit of controversy with this new announcement.

Just days after discovering (to my displeasure) that the team behind Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown had disbanded, Ubisoft made a statement that a new Rayman project is in the “exploration phase.” Being a fan of Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, I’m unhappy to see that Ubisoft disbanded the team and denied a sequel. However, the announcement continues.

It seems that around a dozen members of the team behind Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown are now working on the new Rayman Project, codenamed “Project Steambot.” More controversially, it seems that Rayman creator Michel Ancel is involved with the project. This is controversial due to his departure from Ubisoft in 2020.

Ancel “Left Ubisoft” after 30 years with the company, in the wake of an investigation that claimed Toxic Leadership and even was said to have claimed that his behavior was so bad that “additional managers were called in to act as intermediaries between Ancel and his team.” Ancel dismissed the reports but according to Eurogamer – “Insider Gaming claims his recent involvement as a consultant on the new Rayman project has “cast a less-than-popular light” on its development and ‘raised some concerns among team members.’”

Ubisoft commented on the announcement about the Rayman project and Ancel’s involvement, stating: “We are pleased to confirm Ubisoft Montpellier and Ubisoft Milan have recently started an exploration phase on the Rayman brand. The project is still in its early stages, and we will share more details later. As [the] creator of the Rayman brand, Michel Ancel is being consulted to ensure consistency within the universe.”

While I am displeased by The Lost Crown team’s disbanding, a new Rayman game would be a delight. So, only time will tell if Ancel’s involvement causes the project to fail, or if fans have something to look forward to. Hopefully, this won’t lead to the Prince of Persia franchise being put on ice again, since the Sands of Time remake is still in development.
