There’s something about typing games that scratch an itch that other genres don’t for me. It’s the fact that I was trained to type in childhood and do so in my 9 to 5 that makes me quite adept in this particular skill. When it translates to gaming, it feels great to flex my triple-digit words per minute, and the more creative the typing game, the more addictive it gets. When it comes to Office Overloaded, it truly feels like emulating that aforementioned 9 to 5, where instead of writing finely-worded customer service emails, I’m tasked with typing office words as fast as possible. With a demo available as part of Steam’s Next Fest, it’s time to dig in.

Jumping right into the “action”, Office Overloaded starts you out as an intern that types simple office-related words such as “copier” or “stress” until the day is over. You can get promoted to “junior” where words can start to pile up if you don’t type them quickly enough, but with ample time for the most part. When you reach “senior,” things get out of control as you can get interrupted by words from interns and needing to hold your phone. This is where most typists will hit a wall as the chaos ensues.

While a novel concept, Office Overloaded is only going to appeal to those who thrive on their words per minute and will weed out those who can’t keep up quickly. The novelty wears off for those who persist, too, as the gamut of words is exhausted within mere minutes and the difficulty leap at the senior level is just far too steep from junior. The ten-letter words in particular are real progression-blockers, too. Still, this is worth a go for those who want to put their typing skills to the test as a departure in Steam’s Next Fest.
