Some movies feel like they could work as a video game. Then there’s Tron, a franchise with two films that both feel like they are video games that someone tried to make work as a movie. Truth be told, the vibes of Tron are wonderful, but the films are just okay. As a video game, however, Tron feels right at home. Big Fan Games, a subsidiary of Devolver Digital, together with developer Bithell Games in collaboration with Disney Games, is working on a Metroid-like set in the cyberpunk neon world of the Disney film franchise. Here’s what we know.
Disney TRON: Catalyst is a thrilling, story-driven isometric action game set in Disney’s TRON universe, according to the official announcement. Players will meet Exo, a highly resilient and resourceful program with an incredible ability to initiate time loops. This ability allows Exo to take on overlords within the menacing and evading Conn, a malevolent agent of CORE. Exo must gain control over her mysterious abilities and uncover the unexplained glitch that threatens the Grid.
I’ll be honest, the plot and universe of Tron have always been mostly nonsense to me. The description of this game does leave me feeling a bit confused as well, but here’s what makes sense to me. A top-down Metroid-like with time loop abilities sounds wonderful on paper. Getting behind the Light Cycles made famous in the films and the Disney Parks ride also sounds like a blast. From the short announcement trailer, seen below, it looks like there’s a good bit of action platforming mixed in as well. All of these check boxes I’m often seeking to be filled in a game like this.
