Among the mountain of emails from the Tokyo Games Show I get for the pleasure of talking about games, sometimes it is easy to let certain games or announcements slip through the cracks. That was almost the case with a strange British-developed turn-based JRPG, Rogue-like/lite, fighting game. Now, if you told me I’d be looking forward to something like that years ago, I’d have probably laughed at you, but MilkBubblesGames and Kwalee’s GladiEATers somehow excites me. Not just because I’m thinking about John Anderson shouting it at the top of his lungs. Nonetheless, the publisher and developer announced the partnership on Thursday with a press release:
“Leading UK games publisher Kwalee is pleased to announce its partnership with UK-based independent developer MilkBubblesGames for the upcoming turn-based battler, GladiEATers. The game is set to release in 2025 for PC via Steam.” So we’re still a little away from release just yet.
The press release goes on to note: “In GladiEATers, players can cook up a team of food-based monsters to command in turn-based battles and become champion of the CALosseum! Chop, fry, boil[,] and bake your GladiEATers as one of eight Combat Chefs in single-player, or take the fight beyond the kitchen in online and ranked multiplayer matches.
In single-player mode, players take part in a series of duels with other combat chefs and their teams of GladiEATers in the CALosseum, unlocking new Combat Chefs and GladiEATers, and progressing the story with each attempt. As events among the competitors (literally) shake the foundations of the CALosseum, game mechanics shift in unexpected ways, and players may even find themselves exploring beyond the stadium’s walls…
Every battle begins in the kitchen! Start with basic ingredients and cook against the clock to develop them into powerful creatures. With each mini-game, you’ll change your GladiEATers’ form and boost its stats, but it’s up to you to choose how to spend your time. Will you cook up a complex-but-powerful ratatouille or overwhelm your opponent with a massive serving of simple boiled eggs?“
Maybe after 2017’s Battle Chef Brigade, a cooking/fighting game isn’t all that surprising to excite me, but I think the art was helping in Trinket Studios’ title. Though it might not entirely excite me, the press release also goes on to note, “GladiEATers also features an endless Rogue-like mode with various run modifiers, as well as online VS and ranked multiplayer modes.“
With no release date and the announcement only coming, I’d hazard a guess that we’re not going to see GladiEATers in the next couple of months. For now, we’ll just have to wishlist GladiEATers on Steam and wait for the 2025 release date to be announced.
