We’re getting to the end of the year. This means we have very little time between now and the Game Awards. It also means that developers will have a last-ditch effort to announce and update details on upcoming games. This week we had a State of Play Showcase, a 40-minute display of games and announcements. With the PS5 Pro recently announced, they have a lot to live up to. Let’s get into it.
The showcase started with an update on Astro Bot. The game is getting 5 new speedrun levels, 10 new bots to rescue, and more this Fall. We don’t have a release date, and the developers say this is just a sneak peek, but I’m excited.
The second announcement was for a game developed by the team that created Lost in Random. Interestingly enough, the game (called The Midnight Walk) is entirely handcrafted in clay. The Midnight Walk can be played on PS5, or (optionally) on PS VR2. I love games with optional VR functionality. The Midnight Walk seems to offer an interesting tale about a world where fire is scarce and the sun has disappeared. You can wishlist it now, but we don’t have a release date yet.
After The Midnight Walk came another creepy game. Though this time it seemed to be a sort of post-apocalyptic horror title, with a bit of a fantasy twist. Hell is Us is an interesting action RPG that has horror elements and a post-apocalyptic premise. We don’t have a launch date yet, but the game looks pretty solid.
A new Metro game is coming to PS VR2 as well! Metro Awakening VR is coming to PS VR 2 on November 7th, 2024. A lot is going on that I don’t quite understand since I’m not familiar with the franchise, but fans have a lot to look forward to.
The next announcement was a cool one. Archeage Chronicles is an action MMORPG coming to the PlayStation 5 (and PC) in 2025. It looked like a single-player thing, and had it been more co-op rather than MMO-focused I’d be interested. It still looks cool though.
Then Palworld showed up to the party, which is interesting considering the lawsuit just dropped last week. Palworld is available now on PlayStation 5, with all the content that has been available on PC thus far.
I am very excited about the next announcement. The Lunar Remastered Collection brings back two PS1-era RPGs that I adored growing up. Lunar Remastered Collection brings back Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete and Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete in one full package. This remastered collection is coming to PlayStation 5 in Spring 2025. I’m so excited to play these two amazing classics again.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge took the spotlight next. The “Radical Reptiles” DLC brings Mondo Gecko and Mona Lisa as playable characters. There is also a remixed OST that is available with the DLC. Both of these things are available now, so TMNT fans can jump into them ASAP.
Shadow the Hedgehog showed up next, specifically due to a tie-in with the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 film. The Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Movie pack is bringing scenes (and Keanu Reeves) from the upcoming movie to Sonic X Shadow Generations. This update will arrive on December 12th and is included in the digital deluxe edition of the game.
Another RPG hit the stage next. Fantasian Neo Dimension was originally only on Apple Arcade as “Fantasian.” Now, this enhanced version will be coming to PlayStation 5 on December 5th. I am very excited to finally get to play this one since I’m an Android user and didn’t have access to Apple Arcade.
Next up was an extended look at Dragon Age: The Veilguard, which is coming to consoles and PC on October 31st, 2024. To be blunt about it, I am so excited I can hardly see straight. The combat is visceral, the story looks intense, and I am ready to return to Thedas.
Then we get a new Remedy Entertainment announcement, something related to Control, which is very exciting. There is a new Alan Wake II expansion coming called “The Lakehouse” which seems to be an FBC building in Bright Falls. I’m very excited, as I love anything that expands on the lore of Control, at least until Control 2 comes out. “The Lakehouse” is coming sometime in October, but there is no word on when.
Another PlayStation VR 2 game came next. Agent 47 has full dual wield capability and more in Hitman: World of Assassination. The game is coming in December, though there’s no specific date yet.
I’m excited yet again for another remaster! The Soul Reaver franchise (and Legacy of Kain by extension) returns in The Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered. Return to Nosgoth on December 10th and relive Raziel’s journey after his betrayal by his sire Kain. I hope this will show the developers that fans are still clamoring for more in the franchise.
Next, we saw Blumhouse Games’ Fear the Spotlight for the first time since it was revealed at Gamescom. Fear the Spotlight will bring PS1-style horror back to our consoles on October 22nd. I’m curious about this one, and it is just in time for Halloween.
I like weird, quirky games, and the next game showcased was definitely in that vibe. Towers of Aghasba is a life-sim game in a colorful, unique world that reminds me of a mixture of Dark Cloud and Dreamlight Valley. Towers of Aghasba will be coming to “PS5 Early Access” this November, though we’re not sure exactly when.
Now we get the obligatory Fortnite section. Lego Fortnite is getting a split-screen mode in October. This will allow friends and family to play together on the same screen. Fortnite will also be delivering a unique limited-edition Dualsense controller later this year, with Pre-orders starting on October 3rd, 2024.
Our next segment is for Dynasty Warriors: Origins, where we got another glimpse of gameplay and the release date. Experience the origins of the Dynasty Warriors’ greatest characters on January 17th, 2025.
Capcom brought Monster Hunter Wilds to the show as well, with an all-new trailer. Honestly, this may sound awful but I’m ready for this game to come out because I feel like I’m seeing new trailers every other week. This new trailer showcased weather conditions, fishing, combat, environmental damage, and more. Monster Hunter Wilds will be released on February 28th, 2025, finally giving fans a firm release date.
The next segment showed off something else we saw at Gamescom, Lego Horizon Adventures, coming to PlayStation on November 14th. I love the idea of Lego Horizon Adventures, and I kind of hope more developers take the hint and turn their IP into Lego-based games. There was more Horizon news to be found though.
Horizon: Zero Dawn is being remastered for PlayStation 5 and PC. The new remastered version includes re-recorded motion capture and remastered visuals to bring the game to the same level as Horizon: Forbidden West. Horizon: Zero Dawn Remastered will be available on October 31st.
New content is coming to Stellar Blade, including a Photo Mode. The original soundtrack is also available now on select streaming services. Later this year, there will also be a collaboration between Stellar Blade and Nier Automata. Can Yoko Taro just make a new Nier game already?
As far as PlayStation Plus goes, October’s monthly games are WWE 2K24, Dead Space, and Doki Doki Literature Club Plus. As far as PlayStation classics go, Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain and Dino Crisis are coming to PlayStation Plus soon. The Last of Us is also coming to PlayStation Plus on Thursday, September 26th to celebrate “The Last of Us Day”.
Three new controllers and PlayStation 5 console covers are up for Pre-order on October 3rd as well. Teal, Pearl White, and Indigo colors are part of the new Chroma collection.
Next up came a rapid-fire list of games that are being enhanced for the PS5 Pro. These games include:
- Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth
- Horizon: Forbidden West
- The Last of Us Part II Remastered
- Gran Turismo 7
- Hogwarts Legacy
- Alan Wake 2
- Stellar Blade
- Dragons Dogma II
- Star Wars Jedi: Survivor
- Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater
- Dragon Age: The Veilguard
- The First Descendant
- The Crew Motorfest
- Resident Evil Village
- Demon’s Souls
- Resident Evil 4
- F1 24
- Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart
- Assassin’s Creed Shadows
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
The next segment was another announcement, this time for Ghost of Yotei, presumably a sequel to Ghost of Tsushima. Ghost of Yotei will be released in 2025, and the trailer (while brief) was beautiful, stylistic, and interesting.
With that, this State of Play showcase ended. I know a lot of folks are disappointed with all the remasters, but with The Game Awards coming, I doubt we’ll see too many large announcements before then out of Sony. You can watch the showcase below.
