As much as I am saddened to see the work of those at Firewalk Studios effectively put in the bin, for now, there is something funny about Concord‘s shutdown. The not free-to-play live service title has been canned as of today, the 6th of September, because for a live service game to work, you need tens of hundreds or even thousands of players, and at times Concord couldn’t even have tens of them (on PC). While the creative director for Concord suggests the team will be reworking and see the return of Concord, some would suggest it makes like the plane.

However, according to a report from IGN on the upcoming Secret Level series showcased at Opening Night Live, the show might not be dropping a certain episode. In fact, it was something my editor and I spoke about yesterday, Concord is being taken offline and reworked but Secret Level is supposed to have an episode on the game that is no longer playable? According to a source close to production that IGN spoke to, the episode focused on Concord will remain.

Secret Level is an upcoming anthology show that is set to feature 15 stories based on video game IP. This includes a general PlayStation episode (supposedly including God of War), Sifu, The Outer Worlds (that’s the Obsidian one), Warhammer 40K, Mega Man, Dungeons and Dragons, Spelunky, and yes, even Concord. Though it hasn’t been publically stated either by production or Amazon itself, Concord is said to be kept in the upcoming series.

Personally, I’d argue that the best way to solve the Concord problem is to ship it on every console possible, make a deal with Nintendo and Microsoft, turn it free-to-play, and give the studio time to work on refining it. It won’t happen, but that’s the “easiest” short-term solution to a long-term problem. Given that Secret Level seems to be a billboard for certain games such as Crossfire, New World: Aeternum, Honor of Kings, and maybe Unreal Tournament, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Concord‘s episode be that same thing. One problem, you can’t play it anymore.

Secret Level is set to begin streaming on Prime Video on December 10th, 2024. There is no word on whether each episode will be released weekly or if, much like many streaming services, Prime Video will drop all 15 episodes at once. We’ll find out more in the coming weeks and months as the series headed up by Love, Death & Robots creator, Tim Miller, gets closer to release. There is also no official word on what will happen to Concord both for Secret Level and players.
