Aside from Mclaren throwing away a championship battle because stupidity is contagious, and Red Bull basically giving up halfway through the season, this year’s F1 is pretty good. You could almost say it was part of a golden age of Formula racing. A few months ago I played a straightforward and fun management title that did that very thing, the golden age in this sense being the 70s, “when men were men” and crashing was a question of leaving in a box or with brown underpants.
Yesterday, Art of Rally and Absolute Drift developer, Funselektor Labs, alongside Hell is Others developer, Strelka Games announced the release date of the upcoming management title, Golden Lap. The press release I was sent yesterday announcing the release simply notes, “Golden Lap is a minimalist racing management simulator set during the ‘golden era’ of open-wheel motorsport. Players can assemble a team of crack drivers while strategizing on their budgeting and day-to-day activities, and reacting to unforeseen events on the track.” Nothing special to note there then. Golden Lap is set to release on the 26th of September, the Thursday after Singapore.
Over on Steam, the announcement was a little more detailed, giving bullet points of what to expect. “We invite you to step into the polished shoes of a racing team manager in the heart-stirring ‘Golden Era’ of motorsport, where every decision you make can lead to glory or gravel,” the first point noted. The second goes on to say, “Master the art of strategy, car tuning, and timely pit stops during intense qualifying rounds and high-stakes races!”
The third point notes, “Unleash your creativity through the power of modding! 🛠 Build your dream season from the ground up by customizing teams, drivers, and crew members. Add new sponsors, craft the perfect season, and unlock endless possibilities!”
After playing the demo for quite a few hours earlier this year, I’m more than excited to see what the full release brings. The demo only allows for a handful of races, teams, and drivers; it’ll be exciting to see how it all comes together when you are given the freedom to pick any team, driver, and calendar. Only aiming to be released on Steam, you can wishlist Golden Lap right now ahead of the September 26th release date.
