Something I’ve seen from game developers in recent years is instead of releasing short demos, there are several-hour free trials with a wealth of content. A little-known fact is, back in the day, some demos contained the entire game within the disc/download. Well, getting a big taste of the game before the final product really benefits both the consumer and the developer. In the case of Hollow Survivors: Prologue, there’s quite a lot to play instead of a bite-sized preview. With tons of replayability and plenty to unlock, is it worth trying out this action Rogue-lite bullet heaven?

In Hollow Survivors: Prologue, you’re thrust into the action with a serious emphasis on dashing and avoiding projectiles, as, since this is a bullet heaven, standing still for an instant could mean certain death.

Upgrades are also key to making it past each wave, with some creative ones thrown into the mix, such as dashes leaving behind flames to encourage you to get closer to the powerful enemies. In between runs, there is permanent progression to bask in, with not only stats being able to be boosted, but several weapons to unlock and try out as well. All of this is available in a trial version of Hollow Survivors, which makes it worth coming back to.

I found the challenge level in Hollow Survivors: Prologue to be just right, with the difficulty being surmountable after utilizing the upgrade paths, learning enemy behaviors, and the bullet patterns. This is a standout title in the bullet heaven market which has gotten to be quite saturated and harder to eke out the truly polished titles. Developer Danny Deer has a strong game to present and it’s worth grabbing this free prologue version of the game ahead of its planned release in Q1 of 2025.

A PC preview copy of Hollow Survivors: Prologue was provided by Playway for the purposes of this review.
