I’ve been thinking about what some of my favorite games of the last couple of years have been, and of course, you have big hitters like Elden Ring in there, but the game I can’t stop thinking about the most is Black Salt Games’ DREDGE. Maybe the recent NoClip documentary/interview on the development really helps with that this week, but even now and then I catch myself thinking about the otherworldly nightmares you’d catch. DREDGE has done nothing but go from strength to strength, from a great launch in March of 2023, “The Pale Reach” DLC last November reintroducing cut content from early development, and now “The Iron Rig.”

A press release on the latest DLC release notes: “Black Salt Games and Team17 Digital have today launched ‘The Iron Rig’, the highly anticipated second expansion for the multi-award-winning indie fishing adventure DREDGE. Simultaneously, the Complete Edition of DREDGE is now available across all digital platforms, bundling the base game with Blackstone Key, The Pale Reach, and The Iron Rig for the ultimate sinister seafaring experience.” Going on to note, “For both new players and seasoned anglers, “The Iron Rig” promises to deepen your journey into the foreboding world of DREDGE.

At the time of writing, I’ve not gotten the chance to get hands-on with “The Iron Rig” DLC, though maybe I’ll get around to that after my mountain of priors are done or I get the urge to explore around an oil rig. On the actual story overview, the press release notes: “Players will confront the spread of a mysterious ‘Dark Liquid’ threatening the region while partnering with the Ironhaven Corporation to gather crucial resources and expand the Iron Rig – a sprawling structure that unlocks new opportunities and rewards with each addition, but progress also brings with it unintended and malicious consequences.

Like the majority of DREDGE and as the core team noted during the NoClip documentary, much like the rest of the game, “The Iron Rig” can be started and completed at any point in the adventure. With “more than 50 new fish species to catch,” plenty of exploring is needed, as well as characters to meet and hazards to try and overcome.

“The Iron Rig” DLC is out now for $11.99/€11.99/£11.99, and the Complete Edition of DREDGE is available for $39.99 /€39.99/£37.99. Though that’s not all. Announced back in early July, the Collector’s Edition set to release later this year in the US, Europe, and Australasia is set to release for $99.99/€99.99/£99.99. The Collector’s Edition is set to include the Collector’s box, the Complete Edition on PS5 or Switch, a physical version of the Fish Species notebook, a double-sided coin, An A3 Stonepaper map, a message from the developers in a bottle, a Sign of Ruin replica, and an A3 Stonepaper double-sided poster.
