Devolver Digital is as strong a publisher as ever in 2024, releasing memorable titles like Children of the Sun and Pepper Grinder to merely earmark the first half of 2024. Always managing to find developers with such unique titles and elevating them, it was no surprise that they picked up Anger Foot from Free Lives, the devs of Broforce and Genital Jousting. An FPS with the gimmick centered around kicking down doors and enemies alike, this has been on a lot of radars ever since it was announced a good deal back. How did this title turn out, and is it worth picking up?
As clear as day, Anger Foot is turning heads left and right thanks to its art style. The grotesque, putrid setting and enemies evoke a sense of grossness that I haven’t felt since another Devolver title, Sludge Life 2. Another game that comes to mind, and is also emulated in its gameplay, is Hotline Miami, where you’re also taking on thugs in close quarters with a minuscule health bar and all manners of weaponry. Atmosphere really is the name of the game in this FPS, making it stand out from the pack in any comparisons it may draw.
Past its aesthetic, Anger Foot does feel great in all the ways a first-person shooter should. Operating on its simple mechanics, you’ll be kicking just as much as shooting across the dozens of levels the game throws at you, with tons of enemy types to mix things up in your playthrough. Pistols, shotguns, and even enemies themselves all pack a punch, but you can only take two shots before you go down in these frenetic levels. On particularly tough scenarios, you’ll be memorizing the first parts of levels in no time and blazing through baddies like they’re nothing as you seek the end of the level.
A few things are holding Anger Foot back from being a slam dunk though, sadly. Performance is iffy on even the most high-end graphics cards, as I struggled to fiddle with the settings just right to get to a playable framerate. There are also some catastrophic difficulty spikes at random junctures, where you’ll be faced with too much to handle until you get things down pat in that combat moment. This wears off the novelty of memorizing levels as it becomes tedious before too long, stretching the length of the game unnecessarily to accommodate all the replayed levels.
So, is the quest for the pair of sneakers worth it in Anger Foot? For the most part, yes. It isn’t without some optimization troubles and levels that could use some fine-tuning, but it’s an overall fun time that will get your pulse pounding and bass in your ears slamming. It might be a tad steep at its asking price of $24.99 due to its hitches, but like any Devolver Digital title, it will undoubtedly go on sale for a more reasonable rate in the near future. Check this one out if you are big into Hotline Miami and want it in the scope of an FPS.
