Being forced to take a storm-related vacation, I found myself hooked up to a generator with the bare necessities and my PC. Without the internet, I approached my PC backlog and picked out something low-impact. A Date With Death is a lot like a dessert: It is a short experience (before the DLC) but is also soft, sweet, and fun.

In A Date With Death, you can create your own lead protagonist (including LGBT inclusive non-binary and gay options), who finds themselves in a bet with the Grim Reaper over their very soul. The Grim Reaper has a week to take your soul, or you get Grim’s soul instead. Seems simple right? Well, a cute romance may or may not proceed from your choices.

There are 5 main endings in A Date With Death (without the DLC) and there is a lot you can do. You can read books (short stories) each day, listen to your neighbor (which has a subplot of their own), interact with your animal companion, renovate your room, change your clothes, and a fair bit more. Realistically though, the majority of gameplay involves visual-novel-style chats with “Grim” where you get to know him and the circumstances you’re now in.

Without spoiling the plot, I can’t really elaborate too far here. However, I will say that as someone who wishes more dating sims had LGBTQ+ inclusive options, A Date with Death scratches that itch nicely. It is fun to be able to flirt with the Grim Reaper without having to forcibly play a female character. Also, being able to customize my own avatar/mc for A Date with Death with the options available was also fun.

Truth be told, if you like dating sims or visual novels, A Date with Death is a fun one. It has an interesting plot, and it doesn’t overstay its welcome at a roughly 3-hour playtime, unless you go for multiple endings. Either way, it’s a great way to enjoy an evening or have a few days of lunch break serotonin.
