Another season, another long list of anime to watch. In the world of romcoms, there’s no shortage of viewing, as usual – several adaptations are hitting the silver screen in both sub and dub form, with July looking like one of the biggest months for this genre in the span of 2024. The ones I’m most looking forward to involve some wacky scenarios and others that are tried-and-true traditional offerings. So without further ado, here’s a look at some more highlights of romantic comedy anime to watch in the Summer of 2024.
My Wife Has No Emotion
What seems like an off-putting title at first turns out to be one of the best things to watch this summer. My Wife Has No Emotion entails a loner workaholic who enlists a shapely android to make his meals. One drunken night, he unknowingly rewrites her programming to be his spouse, and tons of shenanigans ensue as his heart opens while the android learns how to be more human and show affection. More on the wholesome side than the campy, this has been a romp when it airs every Monday.
The Magical Girl and the Evil Lieutenant used to be Archenemies
While the school-centric, slice-of-life romcoms tend to be a mainstay, there have been some great fantasy expeditions in the likes of Unnamed Memory and An Archdemon’s Dilemma: How to Love Your Elf Bride. The newest fantasy romcom is The Magical Girl and the Evil Lieutenant used to be Archenemies, which pits a brooding officer against an aloof mage. This one runs in 11-minute increments instead of the usual 22, but packs so many laughs in that time that it makes up for it every Tuesday.
Pseudo Harem
The word “harem” tends to have a pervy connotation to it, but in the case of Pseudo Harem, the entire harem is contained within one character. Rin manages to convey several distinct personalities (each with their own hairstyles) to her foil, Eiji, whom she falls for at first sight. As these individual characters flesh out from Rin, much to Eiji’s chagrin, it’s hilarious to see the effort put in and the end result – a nice end-of-the-week casual watch.
Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian
Watching a sub means I hear Japanese when English is my native language. In Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian, the native Japanese speakers get to hear Russian from the star, Alya. What Alya doesn’t know when she uses this verbiage is that Kuze, the loser guy, knows Russian too, but can’t react to her musings. There could be a real connection between these two when it airs each Wednesday.
