To say the release and post-release of Cities: Skylines 2 has been troubled would be an understatement. I’ve even written an editorial on the nonsense argument that it was fine that the game doesn’t aim for 60FPS, which is still nonsense. Really, I want to like and enjoy Cities: Skylines 2, I want to see it succeed the now 10-year-old predecessor. However, as you might be able to guess by the title, trouble is still ahead for Colossal Order and Paradox Interactive with the console port now indefinitely postponed.

In an update on the Paradox Forum, the team noted:We wanted to update you on the console release schedule. Unfortunately, we have not yet met the stability and performance targets we set for the console release. Without a Release Candidate, we are now unable to meet an October release window.Given the transition between console generations, it is surprising to find that the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S isn’t at least hitting that 30 mark. Though given the PC performance almost a year ago now, it is completely understandable.

The update also notes:While we are making slow but steady progress, there are still unresolved issues impacting the game in ways that harm the player experience we want to deliver. We expect to receive a new Release Candidate, which will undergo a thorough review in August. This evaluation will determine whether we can begin the submission process and provide a solid release date, or if further issues need to be addressed. As I say, I want Colossal Order and, to a greater extent, Cities: Skylines 2 to be good, but it is difficult to say it is there yet, and neither is the console port.

Personally, when I played Cities: Skylines on console for a bit, I found it similar to other real-time strategy-style titles. Maybe for others, something like that is less clunky, but overall a city builder such as Cities: Skylines requires the ability of a keyboard and mouse. Hopefully, for the sake of accessibility, the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S ports of Cities: Skylines 2 can offer keyboard and mouse support either on console release or post-release.
