There are few retro game collections more impressive than Atari 50: the Anniversary Collection. With an already incredible collection of games across the illustrious company’s consoles, Atari and developer Digital Eclipse have announced an Expanded Edition building on the 2022 collection adding two new timelines and 39 additional games. With a ton of in-game content and some new goodies for the physical version of the game, let’s dive into what is coming to this decade-spanning collection.

If you missed this one the first time around, Atari 50: the Anniversary Collection combined a great retrospective of classic Atari games from over the years with incredible deep dives into the stories behind the games. If you missed out in 2022, then now is the greatest time to hop into these games given the expanded library and new timelines. Expanded offerings will be offered as DLC for original owners.

The First Console War timeline, which includes 20 playable games and a half-dozen video segments, tells the story of the first major console war in the gaming industry between the Atari 2600 and Mattel’s Intellivision. The Wider World of Atari timeline, which includes 19 playable games and eight video segments, takes a series of deep dives into stories from Atari’s history, showing how Atari continued to influence the industry over the decades. To this day, most gamers know the impact the company made.

The physical release will include a Steelbook version for Nintendo Switch, which will come with Atari 2600 art cards, miniature arcade marquee signs, an Al Alcorn Replica Syzygy Co. business card, and a Steelbook case. The standard version will retail for $39.99 USD and the steelbook will retail for $49.99 USD. With insights from Pong creator Al Alcorn, Intellivision game directors, and more, this is like a history book of video games mixed with the actual games to play. 

It’s relatively mindblowing to see this already huge collection expand. Retro fans, we are eating good lately, and developer Digital Eclipse is certainly a huge part of that.  Atari 50: the Anniversary Collection will be released October 25 on PC, Switch, Xbox One and Series X|S, PlayStation 4 & 5, and the Atari VCS this holiday, including a physical release on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5.
