Resurrections are rare in the video game landscape, but one has just occurred beneath the noses of the horror community. Video Horror Society, the asymmetrical horror game cut short before it had a full release, had been on minimal life support due to the dedicated fan group “VHS: Evil Never Dies.” The brains behind this operation had created a mod that allowed Video Horror Society to still be playable in custom lobbies.

While this wasn’t close to the game being fully functional, it allowed many fans to scratch that asymmetrical itch. I had been aware of this effort since late September of 2023, but decided to stay quiet about it in order to not draw unwanted attention.

Almost a year later, and there is an update that has occurred which is why I am breaking my silence on this project. On May 24th, it was announced on the VHS: Evil Never Dies Discord server that the game could now be playable on custom matches without mods. This was accomplished by the heads of this group purchasing the rights for the VHSgame[dot]com domain. While this is certainly not a complete revival of the game, it does serve as a victory for the Video Horror Society community and for game preservation.

Sadly there is no way to download the game if you didn’t already have it in your Steam or Epic Game Library, but previous players should be able to download it and boot it up. Since custom games are the only way to play Video Horror Society currently, you will need to gather a group of five total players in order to have a full lobby.

If you don’t have enough friends who play the game, then I am linking the Discord here to find a group of people to play with. If the link doesn’t work, then you should be able to access it by looking up VHS: Evil Never Dies or by going onto the Video Horror Society Reddit Page.

If you have any questions about the VHS: Evil Never Dies group, then I would suggest joining the Discord and reading what they talk about and potentially reaching out to the various members to get even more insight.
