Apple computers are a lot of things, including easy to use, overpriced, aesthetic accessories, and undeniably influential. One thing they have not been, traditionally, is good gaming computers. With few developers bringing their titles to Mac computers and laptops, any non-console gamers worth their salt is likely going the PC route. The newly announced Apple Game Porting Toolkit 2 aims to change that, and its announcement came with word that developers are already planning to release more games on Mac, including some big 2024 releases.

Apple’s Game Porting Toolkit 2makes it easier than ever to bring games to the unified gaming platform across Mac, iPad, and iPhone,” according to the company. Apple is hoping the new dev tool will help development teams take advantage of improved compatibility, expanded guidance, and updated tools available to bring games to Mac. Along with the announcement of the tool is the huge news that Ubisoft will be bringing Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, the upcoming Japanese-set entry in the series, to Mac at launch.

This is huge considering the abysmal showing Apple computers have previously had when offering compatible games near anything of true AAA quality. While Shadows doesn’t release for a while, we did get word from Apple that a slew of developers have already utilized the toolkit and are bringing the following games to Mac computers:

  • Control Ultimate Edition
  • Dead Island 2
  • Frostpunk 2
  • Palworld
  • Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown
  • Resident Evil Biohazard
  • Resident Evil 2
  • Riven
  • Robocop: Rogue City
  • Sniper Elite 4
  • Valheim
  • World of Warcraft: The War Within
  • Wuthering Waves

It’s not the massive list of major titles available for PC devices on the Steam library, but it’s a huge start. I’ve used Macs a lot for work and school, and I’ve always been limited to the Stardew Valley-type games of the world on this type of hardware. Seeing some of 2024’s biggest games like Palworld and Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown are great signs, as well as some of my recent favorites in the Resident Evil franchise. Let us know what you hope to see come to Mac in the future in the comments below!
