Octopath Series Now on All Consoles

Square Enix recently noted that it publishes and develops way more games than is sustainable in 2024. As the company views its future projects and manages its investments more carefully, it’s hard to believe that we’ll see sequels and follow-up titles to some of Square’s recent series. One franchise I anticipate to continue through this new era of the popular games company, however, is the Octopath Traveler series. A good sign to support this prediction: both titles in the series are now available on all gaming consoles and PC for the first time.

Square Enix has announced that Octopath Traveler, the 2.5HD turn-based RPG is now available for the PS4 and PS5. Likewise, Octopath Traveler II, the sequel, is now available for the first time on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One. Previously, both the Sony and Microsoft consoles were missing one game each from the series. Now, PlayStation, Xbox, PC, and Switch owners can all experience what many believe to be one of the most inventive and exciting turn-based RPG series in recent memory.

Along with the news, developer Team Asano has released a free update to Octopath Traveler II with an Extra Battle Mode. Upon beating the final boss in the game, players can now test their skills against tougher opponents from the game, and even some from the first title in the series.

Since launching in 2018, the Octopath series has sold over four million copies worldwide, popularizing the unique HD-2D art style. This design style features “a striking blend of 2D character designs in beautiful 3D worlds,” the press release notes. Going on to say, “both games are a standalone experience set in different worlds with eight distinct protagonists, each with their own stories to explore and Path Actions to use.” If you’re a fan of turn-based RPGs, I can’t recommend them highly enough.

Gamers looking to try these games for the first time may not know which console to purchase the two titles. If you have Game Pass, it’s hard to pass up the fact that both are now available on the subscription service. For Sony fans, PlayStation Plus members who purchase OCTOPATH TRAVELER before June 20, 2024, will receive a 34% early purchase discount. Across platforms, the two Octopath titles are available to purchase in both a bundle and as individual titles.
