For those hungry for new content within the strategy game space, Paradox Interactive has just announced the latest expansion for Crusader Kings III. If you’ve never played Crusader Kings, it’s essentially Civilization but focused strictly around the Middle Ages. Players will choose a noble house and influence the birth and death of a generational empire. Along your journey, you can expect to conquer nations while building relationships and making impactful decisions both on and off the battlefield.

The new “Roads to Power” DLC releases on September 24th, this year. The expansion features two brand new backgrounds which will dramatically affect your campaign. The “Landless Adventurer” will start you out with nothing to your name and you’ll spend much of the early game completing various hired jobs and building a group of followers before seizing power. Once here you can then expand your influence to determine the course of the Empire throughout its future dynasties.

On the other hand, you can also choose the path of a Byzantine Noble. For this background, you must compete against the other noble houses employing tactical political decisions to gain influence within the great city of Constantinople. This particular background introduces the concept of Administrative government to Crusader Kings instead of the usual feudal system employed by most medieval factions. Players will command the Family Estate as the seat of their power which can be expanded as you progress.

In addition to the new gameplay style, this expansion will also include new events, monuments,  activities, as well as cosmetics heavily themed around the Byzantine Empire. Players can compete in chariot racing or dress themselves with new fashions. The music and UI can also be adjusted to reflect Byzantine iconography and culture.

The “Roads to Power” DLC will be available for PC and can be purchased now as part of the Chapter III expansion pass, which also includes the “Legends of the Dead” expansion and the “Wandering Nobles” Event Pack.
