We’re not getting the full month now Jeffrey? As always, with Prime Gaming, you can pick up lots of (I’ll play nice) stuff that quite frankly looks terrible and I wouldn’t thank you for it if it were free. This includes the “X-Ray Bundle” for F1 23, some stuff for Madden NFL 24 and EA SPORTS FC 24, “5+ Tier Skips” for Overwatch 2 which according to Battle.Net is about ten bucks (I’m seeing it in Euro, so currency depending) for whatever that is, the “Night Fighters Overwatch Bundle” for Company of Heroes 3, and some other stuff you don’t care about.
Before we move on to June and what’s available, you can pick up a GOG code for The Lullaby of Life. Honestly, looking at the gameplay of 1 Simple Game’s single offering released last month, I’ve no idea how to describe this one. Noted as an addition to May’s offerings, available from the 30th of May, you’ll be able to play this musically inclined puzzle adventure with lots of colors and simple shapes. The Steam description notes, “Play musical notes to solve timing-based puzzles in a journey where you bring dormant beings to life.“
Moving on to what’s available from the 6th onward, we’re kicking off with something big: STAR WARS Battlefront II (Classic, 2005) – the good one. Available via a GOG Code, you can pick up one of the greatest third-person shooters of all time with one of the best multiplayer offerings on PC, with several maps boasting 64 players vs 64 players, 128 players total. Yes, back when Battlefront felt like there was a battle going on instead of moaning about how Darth Vader is dressed in pink or something stupid.
Also available from the 6th of June, though this time through the Epic Games Store is WolfEye Studios and Devolver Digital’s Weird West: Definitive Edition. A Cel-shaded action RPG from Raphaël Colantonio, co-creator of the Dishonored series and creative director for Prey (2017). The team described it: “It would almost be like an action-y version of Fallout 1 or 2,” with twin-stick shooter gameplay, which explains why I bounced off it. Samuel was a lot more positive when he reviewed it back in 2022 upon release.
Available through the Amazon Games App from the 6th and the most interesting one, Genesis Noir. Developed by Feral Cat Den and published by Fellow Traveller in 2021, Genesis Noir is easily one of the best-looking video games ever made (in that artsy, look how pretty my video game is way) while also being a great game on its own. Maybe not the greatest video game ever made to those that have beaten Malenia to death with their genitals, but if you wanted to play the video game equivalent of Into the Spider-Verse, then look no further.
Moving on to the only other date we’ve got going on for the month of June, June 13th you’ll be able to pick up a colorful, magical life sim/farming simulator, Everdream Valley. Released only last year, you’ll ride pigs, catch butterflies, and swear at carrots as they grow. No sorry, I’m getting confused with Clarkson’s Farm again. Colorful, wholesome, and generally delightful, Mooneaters’ title is for those who want something a little more 3D than Stardew Valley without that Harvest Moon: The Winds of Anthos thing going on.
From one piece of nostalgia to another, but this time one that I think I might like, MythForce. Released last year somewhat under the radar, Beamdog and Aspyr released a dungeon crawler that looks like it watched a bit too much X-Men ’97 and He-Man cartoons, then did mushrooms. Probably best played in multiplayer, this Rogue-like might not be doing anything completely original with its first-person Swords & Sorcery gameplay. Still, it certainly has a look and a feel worth checking out. However, those that bemoan the existence of Epic have to suck eggs.
If you aren’t sick of 2D Metroidvanias just yet, you might want to check out Blast Brigade vs. the Evil Legion of Dr. Cread, available from the 13th with a GOG code. Released in 2022, Allods Team Arcade and MY.GAMES’ platformer doesn’t look that exciting from the outside. It has an art style you expect from an indie platformer, character designs you’ve seen several times already, and what looks to be the same type of story we’ve seen in similar games. There just isn’t that spark pulling me in.
From the explosions of color in The Lullaby of Life to the thin white lines on inky backgrounds in Genesis Noir, to even the Saturday morning cartoons of Mythforce. The last game, which is also available from the 13th of June because apparently the government lied to you and there are only two weeks in June, Projection: First Light has one of the bleakest art styles of the whole month. I’m even including Weird West and its dark cell-shaded art style.
Despite that, it has a deeply interesting concept as a puzzle platformer. You play as a young puppet woman in this world of shadows but you also control what seems to be the only source of light. If you’re one of those smart monkeys I’ve heard so much about, you’re following along. You are creating the shadows, thus you are creating the platforms to jump onto. Available from the 13th through the Amazon Games App, you can pick up Projection: First Light as the final game for the month that we know about so far.
