During a daily doomscroll on X (formerly Twitter), I tend to come across indie titles I otherwise never would have heard of without going out of my way to search for them. It has been my belief for years that SEGA could make untold amounts of money if they released a Chao Garden spinoff, a beloved timesink from my childhood playing the Sonic Adventure games. Finally, I found a developer that is doing just that and I couldn’t be more pleased to discover it. While still in early development, this is a game that a lot of people have been wanting for a very long time.

More than just petting a pet, Bobo Bay looks to recapture everything that made the Chao Garden great and go further with it. With a schedule of competitions, a cavalcade of cosmetics, and a swath of moods and traits, this pet-sim looks fantastic. The NewFutureKids team is only two developers, so with a full creative agency on their side and a surge of nostalgia for its target audience, this could stack up with the likes of Ooblets and Temtem. Bobo Bay looks like a dream realized – one that’s as much of a homage to its source material as it is an ambitious expansion of it.

The post I found the game on has reached one million views and 20,000 likes, a true testament that there’s a serious demand for a game like this. NewFutureKids have tapped the well that has been out in the open for ages, and I’m so excited to learn more details about Bobo Bay as it currently sits without a release date, yet looks quite playable based on early footage. The game has a Discord server and YouTube channel full of developer logs that date back to August of 2022, so the future looks bright for Bobo Bay.
