Sonic Rumble Announced

I’ve always enjoyed strange spin-off games starring characters within highly established IPs. Particularly, I’ve always enjoyed the Mario and Sonic spinoffs no doubt because I’m terrible at the platformers that make up the core series. This week Sega announced the newest addition to this growing family of titles.

Sonic Rumble is a brand new party game starring the cast of Sonic and Friends. Set within a universe crafted by Doctor Eggman, players will take on the role of toy figurines brought to life akin to the Super Smash Bros. series. Currently, the title is development for mobile platforms.

Production is helmed by Rovio, the studio behind the Angry Birds franchise. This new title will be multiplayer-focused with the ability for 32 players to compete against one another. The trailer showcases a variety of minigames. Some bear similarities to challenges from title such as Fall Guys while others seem more inspired by the Mario Party franchise.

While competing in various challenges, players will collect rings which can then be utilized to customize their characters. Speaking of characters, the trailer indicates the entire Sonic cast will be playable along with less frequent inclusions from various titles. Some of the highlights include the likes of Silver The Hedgehog from Sonic ’06 as well as the entirety of Team Chaotix who consist of Vector, Espio, and Charmy Bee introduced in the niche title Knuckles’ Chaotix before appearing sporadically in various games. Even Jet the Hawk from the spin-off racing title Sonic Riders is present.

For those interested, Sega will be holding a Beta test for this title starting on May 24th and running until May 26th. You can register for this test through the official website. The full release of Sonic Rumble is planned for later this Winter though no official date has been set. The application period for this test will end on May 19th.
