With anime in a veritable boom period in popularity, as My Hero Academia‘s sixth season approaches and newcomers like Kaiju No. 8 are reeling in fans far and wide, I’m stuck in my old ways watching romantic comedy anime. This particular slate of Summer 2024 is chock full of tons of great spins on the genre, and with them all airing on different days of the week, there’s lots to look forward to on a near-daily basis for those who love this style of anime. Here’s what’s airing that I’m keeping a keen eye on!
Mission: Yozakura Family
A fast favorite of mine this Summer 2024 season has been Mission: Yozakura Family. Leaning a bit less on the romantic side and more into a thriller/comedy sect, this delightful adaptation sees Taiyo marry into a family of spies that isn’t Spy Family. Securing his bond with longtime friend Mutsumi, the love is palpable. Still, it takes a backseat to some well-animated action sequences and a large cast of characters bursting with personalities and compelling powers they exhibit. This one’s a prime example of come for the love, stay for the awesome fight scenes.
Whisper Me a Love Song
In Whisper Me a Love Song, the coming-of-age coming-together of Himari and Yori is easily one of the most wholesome in recent memory. The bubbly/bright Himari falls “in love” at first sight with the shy/stoic Yori’s musical performance, but the definition of “love” gets put through the wringer when Yori reciprocates feelings that Himari might not even have. What ensues are pure, engrossing interactions between the pair as they come to learn what love truly is. Seeing these two come out of their shell and grow is prime nostalgia, and the musical themes won me over from the start.
Studio Apartment, Good Lighting, Angel Included
Square Enix’s entries in the romcom anime realm have knocked it out of the park with shows like The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague and The Girl I Like Forgot Her Glasses. This high level of quality is retained in Studio Apartment, Good Lighting, Angel Included, a tale of Shintaro unexpectedly welcoming a real angel into his home. As Shintaro teaches Towa the ropes of human life per her heavenly assignment, he is pined over by longtime friend Tsutsumi as well as Yuki-onna Izumi. With more supernatural women to come, this borderlines on harem, but gets a pass thanks to its wholesome nature.
