This week a surprising announcement came from WB Games. The long-awaited next entry in the Batman: Arkham Series will be coming to Meta Quest 3 exclusively. Batman: Arkham Shadow will be developed by Camouflaj and Oculus Studios, the two of which previously worked on creating the Iron Man VR game.

This new trailer showcased only a brief teaser of Batman gliding through Gotham before being attacked by a swarm of rats. This has led to much speculation surrounding the major villain of the game, who many believe to be Ratcatcher. This character is relatively underutilized throughout the Batman universe; a version of the character recently appeared briefly as part of the newest Suicide Squad film but was first introduced in the 1980s.

As the name suggests, Ratcatcher has command over an army of rats and frequently uses them in conjunction with various gasses to commit crimes. I could certainly see this element contributing to some exceptional moments within the storyline that will take full use of the VR headset.

It’s certainly surprising to me that the next step for such a popular series is being relegated to a system that not many people have access to. While VR has certainly been increasing in quality, I think I can speak for many Batman fans when I say that I was hoping for a return to the format that made the series great. Hopefully, in the future, we can expect new material from the original developers over at Rocksteady. Given the disastrous state of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, I wouldn’t be surprised if this project acts as a teaser for the next big chapter within the Arkham universe.

Batman: Arkham Shadow is set to release later this year though Meta and WB have stated that you can expect to see more details surrounding the game revealed at this year’s Summer Game Fest on June 7th.

I've been playing games since I was a little kid. I have a soft spot for Nintendo titles and RPG's but play all kinds of titles across a variety of platforms. Outside of games I love to play music and practice martial arts. You can find me on Facebook and Instagram as well.
