Games can often convey themes and deal with topics in a way other mediums can’t. Sometimes, games can help you process grief, or tackle topics such as mental health struggles in a way that makes understanding them more engaging. Pine Hearts is one such game, aiming to help tackle the concept of picking up the pieces after a difficult loss.

Publisher Little Nook has announced that Pine Hearts (developed by Hyper Luminal Games) will be released on May 23rd. While the game was previously only announced for PC, this announcement also revealed that Pine Hearts will be released on Nintendo Switch simultaneously. Here is what the press release says about Pine Hearts and its release:

Pine Hearts is a heartfelt – and now also handheld – love letter to all those who have experienced loss; offering a welcoming and cozy refuge in which players can unwind and reminisce on fond memories. A brand-new trailer showcases some of the charming, caring characters, activities[,] and locales players will encounter while visiting the picturesque Pine Hearts Caravan Park.

In Pine Hearts players will hop into the wee hiking boots of Tyke, and set off on a vibrant adventure full of mystery and memories, in which every corner of this delightful little world plays host to wholesome encounters and some light puzzle-solving. By helping the locals and making new friends they will unravel a warm and whimsical tale about love, life, memories, and family.

The game will also feature extensive accessibility options such as Simplified Controls, Color Blocking Mode, Full Control Remapping[,] and more at launch, ensuring the park’s gates are wide open, welcoming all players.”

I’m excited to see how Pine Hearts tackles the subject of loss. Sometimes picking up the pieces after a loved one is gone is difficult, so having games that will help people process is an important thing. May 23rd isn’t that far away, so we don’t have long to wait.
