A lot of games have in recent years adopted an in-game solution to modding or similar ways of adding to the gameplay. We’ve seen it with the Creation Club for Skyrim and Fallout 4, Ready or Not has an in-game library of mods, and the questionable Cities: Skylines II is either set to or already has Paradox Mods to offer in-game solutions. While the previously announced The Witcher 3 REDkit isn’t an in-game library or solution, it is set to be a very powerful modding tool for everyone’s favorite low-fantasy RPG. I’ll fight you if you say otherwise!
Jokes aside, the tool is set to be released for PC players later this year on Steam. Though as the Steam update on the kit announced yesterday, you can now sign up to try out The Witcher 3 REDkit yourself, if selected. “Playtest access will be distributed in batches,” notes the news release. For the kit to work properly and to do anything with it in the first place, you first need to own a copy of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and have it installed on the same system as the REDkit.
Speaking about its power for the modding community, the news release said: “The Witcher 3 REDkit is a comprehensive modding tool for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt [that] we’re currently developing. It is based on the same set of tools that were used by our developers to create the game and should allow for nearly limitless freedom in modding it.“
Even those who don’t receive access to the playtest can see the power of the tool itself, as the toolkit offers Steam Workshop support. Like all forms of modding, it is highly suggested that those who wish to check out the mods backup all saves before doing so. Though you can’t just stumble into access either, you need to join a specific Steam group, linked here. Once you’ve done that, you’ll have to opt into the beta by right-clicking on the game within your library and opening Properties. In there, you’ll find Betas and from there you’ll select “Workshop_test” from the dropdown menu.
At nearly 10 years old at this point, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is getting on, but I won’t lie and say I haven’t modded it myself. Most notably a button simply to sell junk. As part of the description says, “This powerful tool offers advanced features and unparalleled flexibility, enabling you to unleash your creativity by crafting new quests, characters, animations, and more.” I’m sure the internet won’t spend its valuable time crafting naked women with unrealistic proportions, offering sex as a reward for pointless fetch quests.
