New Game Mode Coming to Darkest Dungeon 2

A few months ago I covered the latest DLC coming to Darkest Dungeon II, and it appears that more content is on the way. Last week, Red Hook Studios announced that Darkest Dungeon 2, will be receiving an exciting new game mode. Darkest Dungeon 2 is the latest entry in the punishing Rogue-lite Dungeon Crawler series.

The main game mode, Confessions, features five campaigns, each of which revolves around a unique boss encounter. In order to defeat them you must form a party of unlikely heroes and set out on your stagecoach across an apocalyptic wasteland. The game is unique in the sense that your crew will have to battle against their own deteriorating mental state along with various monsters.

The newest game mode, Kingdoms, is a stand-alone campaign mode that will be included as part of a free update. Within this mode, players will traverse a network of inns that act as rest points and a home base for your resistance. Completing various quests and defeating monsters will then allow you to upgrade inns and your party members using various upgrade trees. The mode also introduces three new monster factions to fight against: The Coven, Beastmen, and Crimson Courtiers, all providing new threats to players.

Chris Bourassa, Creative Director at Red Hook had this to say in regards to the update: “Kingdoms is an exciting project for us. If you look at our release history, no game or DLC has ever retread ground, and we’re proud to continue that tradition here. This new mode will blend some of the permanence and roster management of the original Darkest Dungeon with the traversal and combat of Darkest Dungeon II.

Kingdoms mode is set to launch in the second half of 2024, though there is no word on the exact date as of now. Darkest Dungeon II is available for purchase now on Steam and the Epic Games Store.
