I cannot express how much I love it when old, forgotten games are revived. In fact, I’ve got an entire series dedicated to speculating over old franchises. This week the newest gameplay trailer for the revival of Gigantic was released. Gigantic was an Indie developed MOBA/hero shooter that entered beta in 2015 before officially releasing in 2017.
The Steam storefront describes the game as follows, “Choose from a diverse roster of unique heroes, each with a set of upgradeable abilities, and team up with four other players to control objectives and take down the opposing team’s mighty Guardian, all while protecting your own.” Despite not being a big fan of MOBAs, I always wanted to try the game out as I love the hero designs and art direction. Unfortunately, I never had the chance to play the original game back in 2015 as I didn’t have a decent PC at the time and the servers were closed in 2018.
However, in February it was announced that Gigantic will be returning with the Rampage Edition. Abstraction Games is leading the development and is backed by Gearbox Publishing. This week developer Abstraction gave details on the changes coming to this new version. Gigantic: Rampage Edition is not only a faithful restoration of the original game but will add new content in the form of expanded game modes, heroes, and maps.
Rush mode is the newest way to play emphasizing quick matches that last only 10 to 20 minutes. Players are thrown right into the action with fully upgraded hero builds. Teams will earn power by defeating enemies and capturing objectives before assaulting the enemy guardian. Additionally, the original game mode Clash is also available. In contrast to Rush, Clash mode locks you into your hero for the entire match and players will start at level 1 rather than level 10.
Most exciting is the expanded customization options. Each hero has a myriad of different build options that can be tailored to your playstyle. As you play you can also unlock additional upgrades and skins. However, these can all be obtained easily through playing as there are no microtransactions in this version of Gigantic. Instead, the team has opted for a $19.99 sale price, which seems like a great deal given they have promised continued support for the game post-launch, all of which will be in the form of free updates.
Progression is linked to simple challenges and quests that will randomly appear week to week. On top of all that, the Rampage Edition will also feature crossplay between console and PC along with numerous quality-of-life updates. If you’d like to try out Gigantic: Rampage Edition, the game will be launching on PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PS5 on April 9th.
