I spoke about this a lot with our previous managing editor because we both enjoyed the idea of cutting people up, but I want more games where you play as a medical examiner or a forensic anthropologist. Come on now, I wasn’t going to admit to cannibalism in a news article, I’m not paid enough for that. Announced back in 2020, Autopsy Simulator is something a lot of people have seemingly had an eye on, progressively becoming annoyed by yearly announcements of “No, honest this time, we’re releasing this year.” In fact, I am cannibalizing an article I started writing several weeks ago mocking that very idea.
Well, I’ll be jump-scared out of my skin, I got a press release yesterday morning noting a release and featuring a gameplay trailer. “Woodland Games and Team17 Digital announced their medical-horror sim Autopsy Simulator will launch on 8 May for PC. Stepping into the shoes of a [practicing] pathologist, players can expect an unsettling atmosphere and gruesome detail as they unravel the mysteries behind each autopsy,” as the press release notes.
It goes on to note: “In Autopsy Simulator, players will dissect anatomically accurate bodies to uncover the cause of death. Navigating the mysteries surrounding each deceased, while armed with authentic tools, detailed case files[,] and accurate procedures created in collaboration with real-world forensic experts.
In Dead Memories, Autopsy Simulator’s standalone story mode, experience the haunting tale of Jack Hanman and journey through the psychological horror of Jack’s personal demons. The story mode offers a unique combination of simulation and horror, with engrossing gameplay mechanics and spine-chilling moments.” I’ve been excitedly waiting to see more and get hands-on with Woodland Games’ first-person blend of horror simulation for two years now.
Despite the comments online you’ll find, I’m cautiously optimistic and very curious to see if Autopsy Simulator can have a similar charm that is found in Gas Station Simulator. Especially as Woodland Games also looks to develop and self-publish another taxi sim, Taxi Simulator. There is no word of a console release to the true-crime-based gruesomeness you’ll find throughout Autopsy Simulator, and I wouldn’t expect one so soon after the PC release. Autopsy Simulator will be released on PC six weeks from now, on May 8th (9th in Europe), only on Steam.
