Developer Storm in a Teacup is probably best known for its 2019/2020 title, Close to the Sun. A Bioshock-like that got a little… Too close, to the the sun. Jokes and jabs at the Tesla (no, the guy, not company) and Edison-focused take on an Andrew Ryan simulator aside, the Rome-based studio first revealed its next game, Steel Seed, early last year. A “stealth action-adventure game” in a “dark, sci-fi world” focused on the ecological collapse that leads to the seemingly inevitable extinction of humanity. Ok, that’s a shift, and while I’m handing out compliments, I still love the studio’s name.

The press release (also available on Steam) stated yesterday, “Steel Seed is a stealth action-adventure game set in a dark, sci-fi world where humanity is on the brink of extinction due to seemingly irreparable climate change. Join protagonist Zoe and her flying drone companion KOBY as they investigate the depths of a hostile underground facility in search of answers and the key to mankind’s survival.”

Previously set to be self-published, the recent press release for Steel Seed notes that ESDigital Games is now set to publish the title set to release on Epic, Steam, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. CEO of ESDigital Games, Oleg Kudishov, said the following in a statement, “From the first time we saw Steel Seed, we knew that the talented team at Storm in a Teacup had a great concept for their take on the stealth action-adventure genre. We are excited to be partnering with industry veteran Carlo Ivo Alimo Bianchi and his team on this project and look forward to sharing their vision with gamers across the world.”

As stated, Steel Seed is set to come to PC via Steam and Epic, as well as PS5 and Xbox Series X|S in “late 2024,” though some don’t have to wait that long to get a look. With a new gameplay trailer out now, Steel Seed is also part of the ESDigital Games booth at GDC Play between March 20th through 22nd in San Francisco. I’m excited to see what Steel Seed turns out to be upon release, certainly something to look out for at the tail end of the year. Providing there isn’t a delay.
