New DLC coming to Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons

As a new fan of the classic franchise, I was quite excited this week to discover that there will be an expansive DLC update coming to Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons. This reboot is a great new entry point to the series and I would highly recommend it for fans of arcade beat ’em ups.

Double Dragon: Gaiden Sacred Reunion will be released on April 4th and will be free to all players. The new update will feature three brand-new characters. The first of these fighters is the ninja, Ranzou, who was originally introduced as a playable character in Double Dragon IV. You can expect the other two characters to be revealed in the coming weeks.

Along with new characters, two new game modes are coming. Survival mode will allow players to truly test their skills against an endless horde. Another option is to craft your most powerful team and fight against a friend in versus mode. As a fighting game fan, I couldn’t be happier to see this and it’s something I’d like to see become a staple for future games in the genre.

This update will also include the addition of online co-op play for the main campaign mode, as well as a variety of new power-ups and upgrades. Though not specifically mentioned, it does look like there may also be a few new maps within the survival mode that could offer a nice change of pace.

Although I still am hoping for new enemy types and boss encounters, I’m really happy the developers at Secret Base have continued to support Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons post-launch. It’s certainly a hidden gem for the beat ’em up genre. I particularly enjoy the fact that this DLC is free. It’s a welcome sight in an era where games have become more expensive than ever. Hopefully, this is just the start for Double Dragon Gaiden with more great content to come.
