The Dungeons and Dragons universe will continue to expand into the gaming industry with the latest announcement this week. Gameloft Studios has announced this week that it will be partnering with Hasbro to develop and publish a new project based on the popular tabletop game, set within the Forgotten Realms universe. This title will be released for both PC and consoles. Additionally, the development for the game will be led by Gameloft’s Montreal branch, which previously worked on games such as Disney Dreamlight Valley, Lego Star Wars: Castaways, and Dungeon Hunter.

In terms of gameplay, the studio stated this title will focus on balancing elements of survival, life sim, and action RPG genres. The game will also feature both multiplayer and a single-player-focused campaign.

Lee Kaburis, executive producer at Gameloft Montreal had this to say in regards to the upcoming collaboration: “We are honored to partner with Wizards of the Coast to deliver a completely new experience in the Dungeons & Dragons universe. We are all big fans of Dungeons & Dragons and are already hard at work bringing our concept to life, including growing our team, and we look forward to sharing more details in the future.”

Meanwhile, creative director Mark-Andre Deslongchamps stated: “Making friends, both on and off the table, has always been a core Dungeons & Dragons value and it is our goal, as life-long fans, to bring this experience to a different genre renowned for emergent gameplay and shared narrative that can be enjoyed by both newcomers and tabletop masters alike.”

According to Wizards of the Coast executive Eugene Evans, this partnership is the latest step in growing the Dungeons and Dragons brand within the digital space. It will be interesting to see if this new title will manage to capture audiences as well as the Baldur’s Gate series has and deliver a unique experience within a genre.

I feel the universe of Forgotten Realms certainly has the potential to offer something special within the survival genre in particular, on account of the vast array of magical monsters that could force players to adopt various creative strategies. Above all else, hopefully, this new game won’t simply be a Dungeons and Dragons-skinned version of other, more successful titles but with less budget behind it.

I've been playing games since I was a little kid. I have a soft spot for Nintendo titles and RPG's but play all kinds of titles across a variety of platforms. Outside of games I love to play music and practice martial arts. You can find me on Facebook and Instagram as well.
