One of last year’s absolute highlights, and one of my favorite RPGs of last year which I still say after getting around to Baldur’s Gate 3, Sea of Stars stands out not just for its pangs of nostalgia but its ability to be modern too. Well, as announced yesterday by Sabotage Studio, the Chrono Trigger-inspired title has gone on to surpass 5 million players this past month. However, that’s not where the news from Sabotage Studio ends.
The brief statement in the press release reads: “Dubbed ‘Single Player+,’ this mode allows for three players to journey together in Sea of Stars. Staying true to the game’s core turn-based roots, each player will engage in traversal and combat with a new ‘Co-op timed hits’ mechanic as they embark with friends on Sea of Stars’ grand adventure. The new mode is currently in development and more details are set to be released soon.“
Not much has been said, but we have gotten a short look (eight seconds) at the gameplay as intended, featuring Zale, Valere, and Garl. Those who enjoyed the SNES/NES era that Sabotage Studio apes with Sea of Stars will see this as a return to form, with some Final Fantasy games (including the Mana series) previously doing something similar. From family to partners, I can see this being a lot of fun going back to play Sea of Stars with someone else. I can’t wait for this when it releases, hopefully, this year?
