We’ve covered all manners of the Warhammer 40K universe in gaming here at Phenixx Gaming, whether it be Warhammer 40K: Boltgun which hits Xbox Game Pass this month, or the expansive Warhammer 40K: Darktide, which is still going strong. One release that slipped past my mind as I slowly but surely get into this franchise is Warhammer 40K: Shootas, Blood & Teef, a run-and-gun developed and published by the team behind the Guns, Gore & Cannoli series. I love the free will that Games Workshop allows for publishing rights for Warhammer 40K, so is this title up to snuff with the rest of the series?
Warhammer 40K: Shootas, Blood & Teef sees you take hold of a lowly ork thrust into the never-ending war between humanity, orks, bugs, and all other matters of life within the 40K universe. A nice twist as you’re usually killing orks in other Warhammer games, the goofy tone is set from the start, as the main conflict of the game is jealousy over a ponytail. You’ll also encounter all types of space marines, inquisitorious’, and heaps of other bits and pieces that show that Rogueside didn’t just do their homework, they’re massive fans of the source material and injected that into the game with TLC.
The big draw of Warhammer 40K: Shootas, Blood & Teef is the fact that you can wield almost 20 different weapons throughout your playthrough, with more than half of them arguably being absurd, unique guns. Each with its own advantages and disadvantages. The feeling of purchasing a new gun and seeing how it dispatches foes in a new way is a triumph as you can create a loadout for your ork that can take on the game’s insane bosses or massive waves of baddies, whether it be a fireworks shotgun or an arc cannon.
It’s a shame that Warhammer 40K: Shootas, Blood & Teef only takes about 2 to 3 hours to beat, since it’s a thrill ride from start to finish with bombastic boss battles and a breakneck pace. Thankfully, there’s some replayability as the game can be played in up to 4 player co-op. Even if you go it solo, it’s never too easy or hard depending on what skill level you feel you can take on, as there are no cheap deaths and instead some trial and error for the tougher bosses that pose a real threat to those not prepared.
For as violent and rambunctious as it is, Warhammer 40K: Shootas, Blood & Teef is a romp of a good time. It would only be even more fun if you could get a group together and power through it in one or two sittings. There’s not much reason to pick it up again if you’re playing alone, but it’s still worth the price of entry if it hits a sale and you’re even a casual fan of the Warhammer 40K universe. If even for the fact that you can decimate huge mechs with just a few guns, it’s a blast on that basis alone.
