Many people yearn for the early days of the Grand Theft Auto franchise. You know, the days before premium currencies and online modes. Developer Bad Guys Games has a potential way to satisfy that craving and we finally have a release date.

Crime: 1997 will be released sometime in mid-2024, according to a recent announcement. This 3D Open-World game inspired by early GTA titles will be coming to PC via Steam, though other platforms may be announced later. Here is what the press release has to say about Crime: 1997.

Newport City, 1997. In the heart of this bustling metropolis lies a web of millions of stories, and one of them belongs to Henry Gallagher, a member of the infamous Waterside gang. A failed deal leaves the gang entangled in a dangerous situation with the authorities, as they unexpectedly find themselves associated with Frank Sorvino’s Mafia family. Amidst the chaos, a new drug emerges, captivating the entire city, and everyone wants their piece of this lucrative business. Under the guise of mutual respect, a fierce and covert war rages relentlessly.”

Additionally, the developers made a statement about the upcoming game, commenting:

Crime: 1997 aims to pay homage to the classic titles of the famous Grand Theft Auto saga, bringing with it breathtaking, action-packed gameplay and a story full of intrigue and mystery. We are almost at the end of development, and we look forward to the release of the second trailer dedicated to the game on February 20, 2024. With music by the well-known composer and winner as best music producer of Romics 2023, namely Davide Cappello. Any feedback from the community is welcome, and we look forward to sharing more information with you in the future.”

Between moral choices that change the story, managing a drug empire, and enjoying a variety of activities in the city, I can see a lot of potential in Crime 1997. Even as someone who didn’t play much GTA in the early days, I find myself intrigued by the prospect. Hopefully, the full release date will come soon.
