To quote the great philosopher Johnny Hungee, “Adrenaline, in my soul, something-something Cody Rhodes!” Ever since the reveal last week that we’d get the cover and details on Monday, I had wondered what is going on with the covers of WWE 2K24, and now it just seems obvious: 40 years of ‘Mania, Cody, and of course Rhea and Bianca. Revealed yesterday morning, this year’s version of Titan Towers’ Brawl for All is just a little more than a month and a bit away.

Releasing on March 5th for Deluxe and Forty Years of WrestleMania Editions, WWE 2K24 is set to bring back more features as well as improvements to this year’s release. For Standard and Standard Cross-Gen Editions, the official release is Friday, March 8th. This of course means we’re keeping the metaphorical anchor that is the PS4 and Xbox One editions alive, as well as PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. Some will be disappointed by the Xbox One and PS4 editions still being available, but one might assume that this might be the final year for the 8th-generation consoles.

The press release from Monday states: “WWE 2K24 features several franchise advancements, including 2K Showcase… of the Immortals celebrating 40 years of WrestleMania, four new match types such as Ambulance and Special Guest Referee, two new MyRISE experiences, and much more. In addition, fans can also look forward to a massive roster of more than 200 WWE Superstars and Legends.” The 200 mark of course counting the pre-order bonuses, unlockables, and presumably the DLCs. One thing you can almost guarantee is that CM Punk won’t be there at launch.

Greg Thomas, President at Visual Concepts, said, “Fresh off the highest-rated game in franchise history, the WWE 2K development team continues to build on that quality.” Continuing with, “WWE 2K24 offers more match types, new MyRISE storylines and characters, improvements to gameplay throughout, a 2K Showcase 40 years in the making, and so much more. I’m very proud of the work the team has done to bring this experience to life, and I look forward to seeing players enjoy the game.”

One notable change this year is that of cameras. The press release after noting the graphical improvements states: “[…] plus improvements to Ramp cameras and Dive cameras, and the ability to move the camera during live gameplay provide the most visually impressive WWE 2K experience to date.” One of these graphical improvements includes “over 90% of facial expressions [being] updated.” We all remember 2K20, let’s hope it is not one of those “improvements.”

The returning match types that 2K24 will feature are interesting: The aforementioned Special Guest Ref matches and Ambulance matches Harkin back to the days of Just Bring it and such, but also Casket matches and Gauntlet matches are set to return. With these additions come improvements to Backstage Brawls, including 4-player support and Royal Rumbles now supporting 8-players online. Of course, many longstanding matches also return as they were last year, including WarGames, TLC, Hell in a Cell, and more.

With the showcase of the immortals around the corner in Philly, of course, the 2K Showcase… of the Immortals mode is set to showcase the 40 years of the “Grandest Stage of ’em All.” As you have for the last several Showcase modes, you’ll take control of iconic matches throughout the years, with several possible hints throughout the press release. Odds are that Taker’s ‘Mania 22 Casket match against AEW’s Mark Henry probably won’t be included. Though Ken Shamrock did sign a deal for his likeness to be used recently, so that’s the Special Ref inclusion sorted or ‘Mania 14’s match with Mike Tyson.

I would also assume the WrestleMania 30 match will be the end of the Streak, ‘Mania 31 has to be “the heist of the century,” and there is no way “The irresistible force Vs the immovable object” is missing either. If Special Guest Refs are available for Hell in the Cell matches, that’s 28 covered; 29 Rock Vs Cena 2? Mania 25 has to be Taker Vs Michaels. 21 is probably Eddie Vs Kurt, Mania 12 being the Iron-Man match maybe? Currently, there is no confirmation on what will be included, but these are the biggest/non-controversial inclusions.

Alongside this year’s 2K Showcase mode are the changes to gameplay, including “Super Finishers, the Trading Blows mini-game, top rope dive onto a group of opponents outside the ring, double title matches, new Paybacks[,] and much more.” Other additions will include new weapons, the ability to throw them, and a couple of new referees. This will include Daphanie LaShaun, WWE’s first Black female referee.

Some modes, such as MyFACTION and Universe returns, allow you to play out your sandbox fantasies or play around with the microtransaction-heavy section of MyFACTION. I’ll be honest, these are two modes I’ve never really gelled with. To me Universe mode is a poor imitation of MyGM, while MyFACTION seems to be another example of chasing a trend that was made popular by EA with the FIFA series. Something to create FOMO with card packs.

Speaking of MyGM, there is supposedly an expansion of the gameplay this year. The press release states: “With new GMs and brands to choose from, more match types, more Dramas, more Championships, talent scouts, Superstar trading between brands, Superstar contract management and the new Superstar [Journeys], which allows Superstars to earn XP, train and level up to gain new benefits after participating in matches.” Run on sentence much? I like the sound of an expansion to the mode so far, using it as a building block, but I’d like to see it before commenting much more on its additions.

Finally, MyRISE will once again return with two separate stories for your male and female Create-a-Superstars, titled “Undisputed” for the men’s side, and “Unleashed” for the women’s. Once again, there are no specifics on this one, though it is noted your stories will intersect with several Superstars and Legends of WWE. Hopefully this year we’ll get something just as mad as last year’s story with Tavish, but it will be hard to top that… nonsense we followed.

As Thomas says, last year’s title was the highest-rated WWE release in a long time, and I’d have to agree with the general favor towards it. Using that as a building block to make additions and returns of old match types, I think this could be a great year if we don’t have another 2K20 on our hands. There is a slight addition to the creation suite this year that I’ve neglected to mention, however, as this seems to only be a Create-a-Referee and Create-a-Sign option. These are good additions, but hopefully, the rest of the suite is cleaned up and better.

Though I did drag SEGA through the mud yesterday for their pre-order/special edition options, I find it entertaining what is available for 2K24 this time around. Pre-orders will bag you the “Nightmare Family Pack” which includes two alternatives of Cody Rhodes ( The masked “Undashing” Cody, as well as Stardust), and a 1976 version of Dusty Rhodes and his long-term AWA and NWA rival (that isn’t Ric Flair) “Superstar” Billy Graham. Odd to have the reason Cody left the company in the game, but sure. Alongside this, all digital pre-orders of any edition of 2K24 will get you a standard edition of 2K23.

Those who want to pick up the Deluxe Edition will get the “Nightmare Family Pack,” the Standard cross-gen edition and a season pass to all five post-launch DLC packs. This is alongside the usual MyRise Mega-Boost and SuperCharger (like it is a Corvet). Of course, this is also the edition with Bianca and Rhea on the cover, so fans of MyFACTION will have a gold rarity Rhea Ripley card and a gold rarity Bianca Belair card, as well as alternate attires for both women. As I’ve already said, the Deluxe and Forty Years of WrestleMania Editions get you three days of early access.

If you are looking to pick up the Forty Years of WrestleMania Edition, which is a mouthful by the way, you get all of the above and a little more. The “Forty Years of WrestleMania Pack” will include alternate attires for Randy Savage (‘Mania 6), the “deadbeat dad” Rey Mysterio from ‘Mania 22, Triple H’s WrestleMania 30 gear, Charlotte Flair from 33, and Rhea Ripley from 36. You’ll also be able to instantly unlock all Showcase mode characters (removing gameplay?) and you’ll get the WrestleMania 40 arena post-launch.

The Standard Edition of WWE 2K24, available on all platforms will start at $59.99 on PS4 and Xbox One, with PC and current-gen consoles starting at $69.99. The Cross-Gen Digital Edition is also $69.99. As a reminder, these editions will get you access from March 8th onward.

The Deluxe Edition, available on all platforms, is available from $99.99. While the Forty Years of WrestleMania Edition, also available across all platforms, is available from $119.99. These two editions will get you access to WWE 2K24 from March 5th.
