Despite releasing in March, I still sometimes think about one of the most beautiful games of the year a little too much. Terra Nil, from the developers behind Bro Force and Gorn (Free Lives) and the people over at Devolver Digital, is unlike anything either company has done before. An environmentalist puzzle game with hand-drawn art that is nothing short of magnificent, I think Terra Nil is not spoken about enough when it comes to retrospectives of the year, at least in the art department. Thankfully, more people can finally play this beautiful title for themselves.
Released yesterday onto the Nintendo Switch, you can now take the strategy/puzzle title anywhere you go. Particularly where you go to make your own personal compost. The Press release had the following to say: “Using advanced eco-tech you’ll transform desolate, barren wastelands into thriving, vibrant ecosystems. Soil will be purified, oceans cleansed, trees planted, and wildlife reintroduced as you turn a dead world into a living one – then clean everything up and leave without any trace you were ever there.
There are four very different, replayable, procedurally generated biomes to tackle in the game – including volcanic glaciers, ruined cities, and tropical islands. Each has its own uniquely challenging climate, geology, flora, and fauna. Create swamps, rainforests, rivers, and more[,] and watch a dry, cracked landscape suddenly explode with life and colour.” That’s what I think stood out, the bountiful collections of color throughout Terra Nil.
Terra Nil is currently on sale following its release onto the Nintendo Switch, being 20% off via the Nintendo Store. Until the first of January, you can pick up Terra Nil for $19.99, with the price returning to the $24.99 that it is elsewhere such as Steam.
