From time to time, I play games that are decent enough but don’t give me expectations for a sequel. As far as Metroidvanias go, I enjoyed HunterX, though it did have some problems. Surprisingly, the dev team at Orange Popcorn has released a sequel, HunterX: Code Name T.

Dropping out of nowhere, HunterX: Code Name T brought stylish combat and Metroidvania gameplay to Steam as of Monday, December 11th, 2023. Here is what the press release had to say about the launch.

HunterX: Code Name T, the sequel to the critically acclaimed Metroidvania HunterX, offers a thrilling, strategically-driven experience where players can craft their fighting techniques using diverse weapon actions and magic.

In HunterX: Code Name T, Taiyo, the devil hunter, confronts the resurgence of The Night of the Purple Moon, which triggers lost memories. As a result, he embarks on a transformative journey through a fractured world to hunt devils and rediscover his identity.

In this game, you will have to explore a vast world blending past and future, facing gripping stories, complex puzzles, and powerful adversaries. Employ a tactical approach utilizing 190+ collectibles to overcome distinct bosses by pinpointing weaknesses while honing combat skills through weapon-specific actions, dodges, guards, parries, and counterattacks.”

I’ll admit, the release of a sequel has me curious. Having completed the original HunterX, I didn’t think there was much room for more. Then again, I had a hard time following the plot, so perhaps HunterX: Code Name T will clear some things up when I give it a try at some point.

Overall if you’re looking for a last-minute gift or just something to check out and keep an eye on, I enjoyed HunterX. As such, HunterX: Code Name T will probably be more of the same. Hopefully, there are a few improvements to the formula.
