Do I even need to explain things here? One of the most highly anticipated games for the last 10 years, since GTA V‘s release, just got its first trailer after a number of leaks. One last week as a result of an employee’s child. Despite the newswire stating, 9 AM EST Tuesday, the trailer instead dropped due to a leak showcasing the state of Leonida at midnight GMT. Similar in some regards to the trailer we all watched on repeat of GTA V‘s reveal, GTA VI as it is called will return us back to the neon-drenched land of Vice City and its surrounding areas.

According to the leaks, the main two we see in their Bonnie & Clyde crime-scapade are Lucia and Jason. I’m sure one of them won’t find the ire of the internet for not being another straight guy between the ages of 25-55. An updated version of Vice City is the backdrop for these two, from a whole lot of “snow” in the 80s to the Tiks and the Toks of these children with their jeans and tattoos. It is the typical GTA lampoon of our modern society complete with crocodiles walking into Floridian stores. Sadly there is no word if the two featured are called Brutus and Nero.

There is no gameplay as of yet found in the trailer and I’m sure we won’t see that until early next year. That is if we don’t see it later this week at the Game Awards. If the TikTok thing does play into the gameplay, it could be interesting: Say, a little video of you being arrested by cops using extreme force, or maybe waist-height perspectives of your crimes. The press release that came following the trailer states that it will be the “most immersive evolution of the Grand Theft Auto series yet.” Does that mean we’ve gotten rid of the tank controls?

Despite Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick suggesting that the PC platform will have greater importance in the coming years, GTA VI isn’t releasing on PC next year. At least not yet according to the announcement. Coming to the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, there are no specifics on the release date. Let’s be honest, I suspect it might get at least one or two delays. That isn’t a bad thing, but I know that those who seemingly can’t live without Grand Theft Auto VI (though they have thus far) will throw hands with drywall when the delay comes.

I think it looks great, but we haven’t seen enough to make a reasonable assessment. I love the color that is everywhere, even in the night shots. The darkest shots are those in the nightclubs or the cop bodycam footage, everything else is covered in explosions of color and personality, themselves exaggerations of certain groups. From scantily clad women to young Black and Hispanic men in their flashy cars, it is GTA being GTA. Topped with the sound of Tom Petty from his 1989 album Full Moon Fever and the track “Love Is A Long Road.”

Many are excited. I know I’m sitting here writing this dreaming up the same crimes I’ve done a thousand times in many other GTAs. Hopefully, Grand Theft Auto VI can bring about a change for the better in the series as of late, especially as the better part of 10 years has focused on the online. It will be nice to go home to Vice City, at least it will be until I mess everything up. Now go back to playing that trailer on repeat and make the Petty family some money off of one of the lesser favored tracks from Full Moon Fever.
