Star Wars: Empire at War takes place between Episode III and Episode IV in the “Skywalker Saga.” It launched in 2006 as an immersive RTS game set within one of the most transformative times of the Star Wars universe. Today, we’re flooded with content from a galaxy far, far away thanks to Disney, but people still return to this mid-2000s game for a reason. Those dedicated players are being rewarded now as an update to the 17-year-old game launched this week. Here’s what’s in the patch.
Firstly, the update takes Empire at War and its expansion Forces of Corruption from 32-bit to 64-bit. This is ideal for the game, which was never too buggy but certainly will benefit from the additional memory allocated to the game. Other updates are sure to be noticeable to those who have been playing Empire At War for all these years. The patch aims to improve stability, and address balance, and correct unit behavior bugs.
At the current moment in 2023, there are roughly 2,000 players who still log into Steam to play Empire at War. The latest update to the game, while not game-changing, does open the door for some new life for the player base. At a 64-bit rate, you’re able to do more with modding, an essential element to keeping a game’s community running strongly over the years. While there’s hope that this patch might also signal a remake one day, we don’t have any official word on that as of now.
