Another day, another Metroidvania I’m adding to my 2024 to-play list. Developed by Egg or Chicken Games and published by Alawar, Kingsgrave blends rich storytelling, challenging gameplay with unique building features, various puzzles, and stunning pixel art visuals into a spring 2024 release you’ll want to keep an eye on. With a banner year for 2023 releases, you might spend winter catching up on older titles, but this needs to work its way into your playtime come next year. Here’s what we know.

In Kingsgrave, “Your lands have wilted, surviving subjects have abandoned their houses, and monsters created by fragments of diseased souls have taken their places, swallowing up all living beings. It is time to awake and unite the fractured lands, vanquish the darkness, and lead your people to prosperity like old times,” as the press release states. As you step into the dark lands, it’s up to you to become the worthy king for whom the kingdom has been waiting for centuries.

Like many Metroidvanias, you’ll unlock new abilities by collecting resources, killing opponents, and building spaces with which you can slowly conquer the wastelands. Plague creatures fill the woods, deserts, volcanoes, and other biomes in the handcrafted interconnected world. As you maneuver the world like an adventure game, the combat is much like a Metroidvania. There are also puzzle elements that truly make you earn your progress on your way to saving the kingdom.

Kingsgrave is set to release on PC in Spring 2024. Let us know if this is on your radar for the upcoming spring in the comments below!
