I love Narrative-focused games. However, when it comes to things like visual novels, I find that my experience with them is hit-or-miss. Having really enjoyed Deconstructeam’s The Red Strings Club, The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood caught my attention, especially after Taylor wrote about it a while ago. Being a fan of Tarot myself, I was immediately immersed in the story and found myself utterly enthralled.
I will not be discussing specific details about the story beyond the premise. A game like The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood should be experienced for yourself. If I give too many details, it will spoil things too much. However, you should be aware that The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood is heavily choice-based, so your experience may vary and the game itself encourages multiple playthroughs.
The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood focuses on Fortuna, a witch who has been exiled to an asteroid after a dispute with her coven because of her power of divination. After predicting the fall of her coven, Fortuna was exiled and has been alone for over 200 years. Deciding to take matters into her own hands, she makes a pact with a forbidden creature to (hopefully) regain her freedom.
The story that proceeds from there crosses time and space, showing Fortuna’s past struggle with identity, as well as her current desire to find community and acceptance. No two playthroughs will be the same, and though the story arc has a set sequence, the choices you make really matter. From Fortuna finding love to the possible deaths of various characters, The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood is a game that offers a myriad of potential outcomes, all of which are impacted by Fortuna and her choices.
It should also be noted that there is a variety of mature content in The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood. Things like discussions of sexual themes, suicide, crude language, drug use, and mental health struggles. The interesting thing about The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood though, is that the tarot theme isn’t just for show or for story purposes.
During each in-game day, you’ll be able to use elemental energy (gained from doing readings) to craft new Tarot cards. Each card has 3 aspects to it, and there are a variety that go together. However, depending on the combination you make in each card (with hundreds of possible options) the card may provide different results in readings.
This is accompanied by beautiful artwork, character designs, and an enchanting soundtrack. I honestly can’t overstate how every aspect of The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood beautifully interconnects with each other. The story is accentuated by the artwork and music, while the card creation adds a sort of deck-building element that makes the choices feel more impactful. The card creation also gives you a sort of creative outlet to build a deck based on whatever goals you have for Fortuna’s journey.
With October in full swing, if you’re looking for a beautiful story with a witchy aesthetic, The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood is perfect. Its only major downside is a lack of text-accessibility for size or font. If you’re looking for a Halloween-ish game that doesn’t involve horror, this also fits. Alternatively, if you liked The Red Strings Club and just want more of Deconstructeam’s masterful storytelling, this scratches that itch too.
