New Cyberpunk Live Action Series in Development

Since I recently speculated on the growing plethora of live-action remakes and productions, I thought it was worth discussing the latest announcement that may be hitting your TV screen in the future. This week CD Projekt Red announced a collaboration with the Anonymous Content production studio. The studio will be working on a live-action project set within the game universe of Cyberpunk 2077.

For those unfamiliar Anonymous Content is an independent studio with an impressive background. They are responsible for Emmy Award-winning shows such as True Detective, and Mr. Robot as well as Oscar-winning films like The Revenant. If you’ve seen Mr. Robot then you know this is an excellent choice for a lead studio. The show contains many similar themes to Cyberpunk despite being set in the modern era and tells a complex psychological narrative of a hacker group rebelling against a megacorporation.

The new project is being helmed by Head of Television Garret Kembel, Director of Development Ryan Schwartz, and Chief Creative Officer David Levine. David previously worked at HBO and monitored the production of well-known series like Game of Thrones, True Blood, and Westworld. Currently, it is still in the conceptual stage and the team is searching for a screenwriter. The story is said to be a completely original narrative set within the universe produced in close collaboration with the creative studio at CD Projekt Red. It’s still unclear as to whether this project will be either a film or a television series.

I suppose this shouldn’t come as much of a surprise given the positive critical reception to the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime series which aired in 2022 and received numerous awards. Though I have found myself somewhat ambivalent towards the cyberpunk genre as a whole, I was a big fan of Mr. Robot and I’m excited to see what Anonymous Content can bring to the expansive game world of CD Projekt Red.
