I’ve said it a lot in reviews and I’ll say it right now. Bethesda’s latest title Starfield has been missing a lot of features that should have been in there at launch. Updated yesterday to address a small number of issues, the hotfix update 1.7.29 is generally about performances and crashes, as well as fixing the “All That Money Can Buy,” “Into the Unknown,” and “Shadows in Neon” quests as there are points which could block progression. It is a simple enough update to come out that I could basically cover in a paragraph.

What is interesting though is the note that comes along with it on the Bethesda.net post talking more directly about what is next. It turns out, that what is next is a whole lot of features that (as mentioned) should have been in the game from day 1. Oddly enough though, only 2 of them are PC specific. These are the features that are coming in future updates:

  • Brightness and Contrast controls
  • HDR Calibration Menu
  • FOV Slider
  • Nvidia DLSS Support (PC)
  • 32:9 Ultrawide Monitor Support (PC)
  • Eat button for food!

The statement later goes on to say: “We’re also working closely with Nvidia, AMD, and Intel on driver support, and each update will include new stability and performance improvements.”

Given it is a Bethesda RPG which usually means first-person and third-person RPG set in mythical/fantasy or retro-futuristic sci-fi, I’m surprised an FOV slider wasn’t already there. Not only that but brightness and contrast? I could be wrong, but most people seem to have a problem with the LUT used to give this washed-out Alien vibe. Not really the brightness and contrast, though it should have been there in the first place.

Beyond these immediate updates expected sometime within the next while, we also got an update on something else Bethesda has made commonplace: “[W]e are working on our built-in mod support (Creations) that will work across all platforms similar to what we’ve done with Skyrim and Fallout 4.” That can sometimes be a great help for those on consoles particularly when issues come up and you don’t have the freedom of PC play. The statement goes on to say, “This full support is planned to launch early next year. Until then, we know our PC community is already very active in the modding space and if you have any feedback on how we can make this better, please let us know.”

The post also waffles on to say something about mods being important on the PC platform, which is evident given Starfield launched without an FOV slider or tools to help reduce motion sickness the best way possible. Furthermore, it does the usual half-hearted PR line “keep the feedback coming.” I make it no secret that I’m a massive fan of sci-fi shows, films, and games, and though Starfield falls within that, I also want to see it be made at least accessible. Hopefully, more updates will come to aid with that too.
