There’s been quite a lot of time to spend with Street Fighter 6, but the development team is keen on releasing new content. After Rashid was added as the first DLC character and a pricey Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles collab announcement was made at EVO, it’s almost time for the next fighter. We first got to see her visuals back at EVO and now we have an entire gameplay trailer for A.K.I.
Street Fighter 5 fans are sure to notice the similarities between her and F.A.N.G., who debuted in that title. Aside from the similar naming structure, they both have a unique poison mechanic that’s used in conjunction with long claws. The official Street Fighter 6 website also cements their connection as he is her master.
Considering that her predecessor wasn’t very liked as a character or even in gameplay with the previous entry, there is naturally some worry that A.K.I. might suffer the same fate. The community reaction has mostly been positive though and part of that is due to a variety of techniques that prove she isn’t just a palette swap of the man that came before her. Many of her attacks and movements are reminiscent of a snake, from how she can contort around the enemy’s body to literally slithering along the ground.
Having an eye-catching design and psychotic character traits certainly help too. Amidst the sea of comments saying that they can fix her, there is something to say about having a more eccentric character like this instead of the more typical attractive types. Street Fighter 6 has done a wonderful job at incorporating a variety of characters, even those outside of the common archetypes for the genre, and I’m personally all for it. We’ll have to wait to see if she plays well when she releases later this month on September 27th.
