With Tuesday, August 22nd marking the opening of Gamescom 2023, a lot of folks are wondering about what we might see this year. This is doubly true for Geoff Keighley’s annual “Opening Night Live” event, which usually gives a variety of exciting announcements and updates. In the spirit of getting ready for our coverage of the event, here are a few things we might see Tuesday night! Note: Some of these are more likely than others.
Hades 2 – Considering Hades 2 was revealed at the last Game Awards event, the idea of Hades 2’s Early Access release date popping up at Opening Night Live makes sense. This is especially true since Geoff Keighley mentioned recently that Opening Night Live 2023 would feature more game updates than game announcements. Even if we don’t get the Early Access release date, we might at least get a new trailer.
Hollow Knight: Silksong – Ok, this is the wishful thinking part, or the part where you take a shot every time someone suggests a showcase will reveal Silksong and then you get alcohol poisoning. Microsoft mentioned (before the delay) that Hollow Knight: Silksong would be released in the first half of 2023. After a delay, it only makes sense that even if we don’t get it until 2024, a gameplay trailer or some sort of information could appear.
Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth – Now that Final Fantasy XVI has been released, the Square Enix marketing department can really start working on revealing new information about Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth. We got a nice trailer earlier this year, and the dev team mentioned that more information would be coming as the year progressed. Maybe we’ll finally get to see Vincent in action? Or more cryptic lore for fans (like me) to endlessly theorize over?
Alan Wake 2 – This is more of a possibility than a sure thing. Alan Wake 2 has already gotten some decent coverage ahead of its October 27th release date. However, if Remedy Games were to show more details about Alan Wake 2 ahead of release, it does feel like Opening Night Live would be a good time.
Disney Dreamlight Valley – Now this is a strange one to include on this list because technically the game is already out in the wild. However, Gamescom 2023 would be a great place for the developers to announce a release date for the September update which coincides with the Halloween Star Path. It also might be a good time to reveal whatever they have planned next beyond that since the current roadmap reveals that more is coming in 2023 after the September Update but doesn’t offer a lot of specifics.
Some sort of Kojima appearance – Hideo Kojima tends to pop up (at least in spirit) for 99% of all Geoff Keighley productions. With Kojima working on Death Stranding 2 and a few other projects, I wouldn’t be surprised if he appears in some capacity.
Common Mainstays – Obviously, there are usually some other common add-ons for Geoff Keighley shows. We may see more content for Fortnite, Call of Duty: Warzone, Genshin Impact (or Honkai Star Rail), and a variety of other more online/multiplayer-focused titles.
Obviously, there is room for a variety of surprises too. I’m sure we’ll see some new announcements, and there are some things I hope we see that are so outlandish that I won’t even mention them here. Are you excited about Gamescom 2023? Tell us what you wanna see in the comments!
