Earlier this year it was revealed that Granblue Fantasy Versus would be receiving a closely-named sequel, Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising. Since then there have been multiple character reveals and even an open beta that was held a couple of weeks ago. The one piece of information we’ve been sorely lacking however is a release date. Thankfully, we got that and a bit more during this year’s EVO event.

First up was a gameplay trailer for the character Nier, who was only teased before. She’s one of the Evokers who can summon an entity based on Major Arcana. In her case, she became connected with the arcana of Death. This is represented in her gameplay as many of her attacks feature her freezing up and having Death fight in her stead. She can also use it with some armored moves and potentially counters as well.

It wouldn’t be an EVO reveal without throwing in a new character too. The ending of her gameplay trailer also showed a very brief tease of Grimnir. We didn’t get to see much besides a snippet of his intro in this trailer, but it wasn’t long before we got to see a bit more.

The second trailer shown was the announcement trailer. This was more of your standard trailer that showed everything the game has to offer. The story mode is shaping up as an epic three-parter that will feature huge boss battles. Plenty of adorable chibi-versions of the characters will also be playable through both the lobby and the Fall Guys-like mode called Grand Bruise Legends. In between all of the gameplay montages, there was also a short segment showing off Grimnir. Finally, it was announced that the game will release on November 30th, 2023.

Some of the most exciting news was shared outside of the trailer though. Three versions will be available: the $49.99 standard edition, the $74.99 deluxe edition, and a free edition. The latter will feature four characters (three of them rotating), a multitude of modes including online play with everyone else, and the entirety of Grand Bruise Legends. It’s an accessible choice that will convince more people to check out Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising. I’ll certainly be giving it a try when it releases in a few months. A more in-depth breakdown of the different editions can be read on the game’s official website.

Samuel (he/him) has been obsessed with video games since he was a kid watching bumbling zombies shuffle down a hallway in Resident Evil 20+ years ago (it's debatable if he should have seen a mature-rated game at that age but he's personally okay with it). His hobby of writing and talking people's ears off about video games has always felt like a perfect match. Feel free to let him talk your ear off on Twitter!: https://twitter.com/xxsammorenoxx
