Last month saw the fifth season begin for Gundam Evolution, headlined by the Susanowo unit and some near-universal balance adjustments. It was a bit slower than how jam-packed the previous two seasons were and all the new content they introduced, but the content seemed to be coming in at a decent pace. There certainly wasn’t much worry that it would be stopping anytime soon. Unfortunately, the Overwatch-inspired take on the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise will be ending after just one year of service.

The announcement of the game’s service ending came last week through both Twitter and as a news post on the official website. The expressed reason is that they “determined that it is no longer possible for us to provide a service that satisfies our players.” That isn’t a lot to go off of and although there is plenty of reasons to guess why this is happening, it doesn’t change the fact that it’s a sad situation.

We’ll still be seeing updates until November comes around though. A final mission briefing livestream was held on Friday that went over the road map leading up to the end of service. The mid-season update for season 5 has brought some balance adjustments and an end to the sale of EVO coins. A special campaign will also run over the next month, allowing players to earn up to 2,050 CP currency each week. Season 6, called Light of Z, will be launching in August with the Zeta Gundam unit and two new maps. Season 7, called Last Shooting, will meanwhile launch in October with the Kampfer unit and one new map.

Check out the final mission briefing stream below for a more comprehensive breakdown. Although my excitement waned off in comparison to when I first played it, mainly due to the monetization and unfortunate technical issues, I can’t deny that I’m sad Gundam Evolution won’t be around much longer. I’m equally sad we never got to see the Strike Freedom or the Gundam Aerial join either. At the end of the day, it just would have been nice to see this last longer than a year.

Samuel (he/him) has been obsessed with video games since he was a kid watching bumbling zombies shuffle down a hallway in Resident Evil 20+ years ago (it's debatable if he should have seen a mature-rated game at that age but he's personally okay with it). His hobby of writing and talking people's ears off about video games has always felt like a perfect match. Feel free to let him talk your ear off on Twitter!: https://twitter.com/xxsammorenoxx
