On Wednesday, July 12th at 4 PM EST, Limited Run Games released their summer games showcase. Simply called LRG 2023, the event featured a time-traveling Josh Fairhurst (the CEO at Limited Run Games) talking to a crowd at E3 1995 about some of the upcoming games that Limited Run Games will be releasing physical versions of in the next twelve months or so.
While the announced games and overall presentation were both rather kooky, there were five notable announcements that caught my attention. Without further ado let’s hop on in! Please note that these are not given in any specific order.
1: Shantae Advance: Risky Revenge
While I had never heard of Shantae until the original game got a physical re-release through Limited Run Games, it appears that the Shantae hype train still has some steam in it. A previously unreleased game is being brought into the series. Shantae Advance: Risky Revenge is a game that was planned for release back in the early 2000s, but failed to go out to the public since no publisher was willing to take a risk on it in the way that the developers wanted it.
Now, this game will finally see the light of day through the backing of Limited Run Games. This appears to be a release that will solely be for Game Boy Advance, but that could change once pre-orders begin. 2: Midnight Fight Express
A game that I reviewed all the way back in September of 2022, Midnight Fight Express is a great fighting game that closed out last year. This game is now on track to get the physical release treatment on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4. When this physical release will start pre-orders is currently unknown at the time of writing, which gives me the feeling that it will probably be this winter at the earliest. Regardless, it will be interesting to see what they decide to do for a physical release as there is a lot that they could pull from the lore of the game. Until then, we will have to wait for more details to come out.
3: Colossal Cave Remake
Another game that I had the honor to review kicked off what has been a pretty good year in gaming. Colossal Cave Remake is a wonderful game that brings a classic game into the modern age with updated graphics. Seeing a game from the 1970s be brought to life on modern consoles is amazing and now there is going to be some sort of physical release which could be interesting. We will have to wait for more details since there was no date given. However, the physical release will be coming to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Steam, and Xbox Series X|S.
4: Another Crusade
Another new game that was announced at LRG 2023 was Another Crusade, a game that I had no idea about. Apparently, the game has been kicking around for quite a bit as a demo on Steam. A turn-based RPG that has a similar artstyle to Super Mario RPG, the game will finally be released in the fall of this year.
It is unclear if Limited Run Games will just be facilitating a digital release of the game or a physical one alongside it. Regardless, we should expect to get more details very soon considering that summer is quickly coming to an end. The game will be released on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Steam this fall.
5: Clock Tower Remastered
One game that seemed vaguely familiar when they showed it was a Remastered version of Clock Tower. This horror game was never released outside of Japan, but will now be brought to modern consoles through the use of Limited Run Games’ Carbon Engine. With this game seemingly being remastered due to the success of River City GIrls Zero, it is safe to assume that the other games in the Clock Tower series could get their own remasters should this one succeed.
Clock Tower Remastered will launch on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam early in 2024. Like with the others on this list, further details are coming at a later date.
