I’m a long-time fan of the Hellboy franchise, minus the 2019 film at least. As such, I’m excited for Hellboy: Web of Wyrd, created by Upstream Arcade, the creators of West of Dead. We hadn’t really gotten to see gameplay before now, but thanks to a new trailer, we have a bit more information.

Set to release on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox consoles, Hellboy: Web of Wyrd is a “roguelite action brawler” with an original storyline created in collaboration with Hellboy creator Mike Mignola. This collaboration also extends to the visual style, which has been crafted to evoke a similar feeling to the original Hellboy comics.

In terms of premise, we know that Web of Wyrd will take place in The Butterfly House, a mysterious place built upon “occult ley-energies” whose many doorways lead to a “terrible and fascinating” dimension known as The Wyrd.

This roguelike journey through The Butterfly House to locate a missing B.P.R.D. agent promises a mix of exploration and “monstrous, toe-to-toe” combat experiences as players go up against a “menagerie of nightmarish creatures and homunculi“.

We don’t have too many other details yet, but it would be interesting to see if other characters (particularly Hellboy’s allies) will show up as you play or if this will be a purely solo Hellboy adventure. We do know that Hellboy: Web of Wyrd will release on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Switch, and PC.

The trailer also gives a glimpse of Lance Reddick’s performance of Hellboy in the game, which happens to be one of his final performances prior to his death earlier this year. He was a stellar performer, so it’ll be interesting to see his take on Hellboy as compared to others who have played him.
